The Blow-ins (Bridget Cousins and Phil Bennett) play acoustic harp and guitar with vocals in
harmony. Scarborough-based, they are known at local folk sessions (especially Mojo’s!) and
have been heard on Coast and County radio and Tempo Fm’s FAB Folk and Blues. Described
by the latter’s Tony Haynes as ‘one of North Yorkshire’s best kept secrets’ they are regular
performers at the FolkEast festival and this Spring presented a series of quiet drop-in
sessions at Scarborough Library - ‘5 minutes of Peace’ - to support mental health and
wellbeing.
Summer 2020 saw them playing livestreams from their Facebook page Bennett/Cousins
music, and lockdown sets for the Headland Festival and for Sound of Scarborough. Their
lyrical music has been developing since they met on the island of Iona in 2012 - they play
their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary folk, and also compose their own
songs and tunes.
lyrics
She’s only a bird on a clifftop, smaller than my hand
The wind ruffles her feathers, her tail a tiny fan
She’s only a bird on a clifftop but she’s flown ten thousand miles
And you can see from the look in her blackberry eye
She’s determined to survive
He’s only a fox in the forest, red as the autumn leaves
The wind carries his scent away, but his sides heave as he breathes
He’s only a foxin the forest, but he watches the hounds as he hides
And you can see by the look in his bright chestnut eye
He’s determined to survive
She’s only a child in a dinghy, frail as a flower in snow
the wind tosses her on the waves, her face flecked with the foam
She’s only a child in a dinghy, so still she seems barely alive
But you can see from the look in her sea-green eyes
She’s determined to survive
We seem only a few among many, but maybe we hold the key
For the wind of change is blowing and its calling you and me
We seem only a few among many, but what if we were to find
That the bird and the fox and the sea-tossed child
hold a message for all humankind
There’s only one earth in the Universe and its home to the human race
And the wind that is coming could blow us away, we could vanish without a trace
There’s only one earth, it’s our planet, so how about now being the time
When we care for the bird and the fox and the child
And maybe we’ll survive
