about

Steve Blacklidge is a Scarborough based guitar-picking singer/songwriter who has been reliving his youth through song, playing solo acoustic gigs in local cafes and bars for the last few years.
The song - BetterDaysGonnaCome - a bleakly optimistic/optimistically bleak snapshot of real life survival as experienced by fictional characters, was written as a response to the trials and tribulations of life in the days before the new normal was a thing but resonates powerfully in the strange times we now find ourselves in.
It was recorded at Indigo Alley and was co-produced and mixed by Mr Jim Taylor.

lyrics

‘Better days gonna come’

Mary down the street she works three jobs to make a living
Never has the time to count the blessings that she’s given
The tears she cries she keeps those tears hidden
Shouts and bawls at her kids and wishes that she didn’t
Her daughter Rosie she gets bullied when she’s at school
Knows what it’s like to live with the pain of ridicule
Things they say the things they do they’re merciless and cruel
But she won’t tell her teachers ‘cause she thinks they’re all fools
Better days gonna come

Carl down the pub he’s real handy with his fists
Gets messed up when he thinks about the childhood that he missed
Never felt the warmth of love Can’t remember his mother’s kiss
Got scars on his soul just like the scars on his wrists
He gets real down sometimes
Spends days on end in bed
Gets pills off the doctor to make him right in the head
No amount of talking no blister packs of meds
Can stop him from believing sometimes he’d be better off dead
Better days gonna come
Yeah yeah yeah

Better must come for each and everyone
Better days got to come
There’s a guy called Marcus thought god was on his side
On his bike to meet some friends he met when he went to pride
Got some trouble from some kids didn’t know they carried knives
But they cut him and they run Didn’t care if he lived or died
Better days gonna come
Violence and hatred on my television screen
Brothers and sisters homeless in days like these
Brothers and sisters fighting Makes you want to cry
Makes you want to scream out loud for days like these

Will better days ever come…..
